What to do if you run out of fuel (and how far a warning light really goes)

How many miles you have after the low fuel light comes on, what to do if you run out on a motorway and how to avoid misfuelling.

Updated 10 October 2026 · FuelPriceAtlas

The fuel light usually comes on with 5–10 litres left, which is typically 40–80 miles in a modern car, but it varies by car and driving style. Check your handbook.

If you run out on a motorway

  • Switch on hazard lights and coast to the hard shoulder or emergency area.
  • Leave the vehicle by the left door, stand behind the barrier and call breakdown cover or National Highways.

If you put the wrong fuel in

Do not start the engine. Call your breakdown provider: pumping out the tank early limits the damage.

Avoid the problem – find the nearest price-checked station on the map.
