Fuel in the Scottish Highlands and islands: prices and planning

Why fuel costs more in remote parts of Scotland, how far apart stations can be and how to plan fill-ups for the North Coast 500 and island trips.

Updated 12 October 2026 · FuelPriceAtlas

Prices in the Highlands and islands are usually above the national average because deliveries are long and there is little competition. Stations can also be far apart and some close early or on Sundays.

Plan ahead

  • Fill up in a larger town (such as Inverness) before heading into remote areas.
  • Do not let the tank drop below a quarter on routes like the North Coast 500.
  • Check opening hours – many rural stations are not 24-hour.
