Brent vs WTI: what is the difference?
Brent is the benchmark for North Sea crude and sets the price of much of the oil traded in Europe. WTI (West Texas Intermediate) is the benchmark for US crude.
Brent matters more for UK and European pump prices, although the two usually move in the same direction. The gap between them depends on supply, stocks and transport costs.
How does crude oil affect pump prices?
Crude oil is only one part of the pump price. Refining margins, wholesale and retail margins, fuel duty and VAT, and the pound-dollar exchange rate all count too. Changes in crude usually reach the forecourt with a lag of days to weeks, and falls are often passed on more slowly than rises.

FAQ
What is Brent crude?
Brent is a blend of crude oil produced in the North Sea. Its price is the main benchmark for Europe and much of the world.
Why does oil rise but pump prices do not change straight away?
Pump prices react with a delay: fuel already bought, refining margins and exchange rates all play a part. The effect usually shows after a few days to a few weeks.
What unit is the oil price quoted in?
US dollars per barrel. One barrel is about 159 litres.
